MPSA Mailbag 3/03/2011

What the neighbors are telling us. Except for our notes, mailbag items do not represent MPSA position

Nuisance activity - What is it with people having sex in public? About 12:30am I looked out my window and spotted two guys having sex in my driveway. Since all the lights are off I slipped out there with my flashlight, and snuck up to the gate to tell them off. One of them bolted in one direction, and the other fell flat on his face in the driveway before he got up and ran in the other direction. In the past I have managed to hose people down for doing that in my driveway…

Utility workers? - I recently moved to the area, and tonight when starting to take my dog out to use the bathroom at 12:30 am, I noticed a white truck stopped in front of my house and a man outside with a flashlight walking around my yard. I couldn’t tell if the man had any kind of uniform on or if the truck was yours or not, as I was a bit worried about being seen. Can you please let me know if this was the alliance – it will help settle my nerves a bit (or I at least hope it does!). MPSA Reponse: we believe this was either Georgia Power or Comcast since they were out in full force that evening. After a thudnerstorm such as the one we had that evening, they routinely inspect lines along the sidewalk and into homes and buildings for damage and dangling branches that can cause problems later. They told us in response to our inquiry that their vehicles and crews are clearly marked. But always report unknown individuals on your property unless you clearly know who they are.

Park question – Is it true that you can go to jail for being in Piedmont Park after Midnight? MPSA Response: This is most definitely true! Under City Ordinance, all parks including Piedmont Park are closed to all public use from 11pm to 6am. Because of public safety problems – not only vagrancy and nuisance activity, but especially more serious crime like street robberies, assaults, and drug activity – police routinely conduct random park sweeps several times on nearly all nights. Those found in the park during those sweeps, regardless of reason, are with very rare exceptions taken to the city jail and held until released by a Municipal Court judge. This process can take 12 to 24 hours, and longer if the arrest occurs on holidays and weekends. Once released from jail, violators can also expect considerable time and expense to pick up personal effects such as cameras and cell phones at the property room deep in the westside of town, and pets at the animal control facility in yet another part of town. In short, we strongly urge you to mind the park curfew. Dark areas are not safe anyhow!

Dangerous vagrant – Attached is a photo of a homeless man that was arrested at Midtown Promenade last night. He was charged with disorderly conduct, violation of knife ordinance and issued a criminal trespass warning for the property.  I thought you should be aware situation. MPSA NOTE: we posted the photo and the knife in his possession below.
