Benefit for one of Atlanta’s Finest

October 31, 2010 · Posted in Announcements, Eye on Midtown · Comment

This came to us from John Wolfinger of Virginia Highland – This is a different sort of message than I usually am asked to pass on from APD – but one that I am very glad to do when asked by my friend, Detective Pat Apoian. There is a very special sort of camraderie amongst police officers and this is a very good example of this bond. These are folks who put their own personal safety and well-being at risk every time they come on duty to protect us, and this is an easy way to say “thank you” in a special and meaningful way. As we all know, people do not sign on to become police officers for the financial rewards – but to be of help and assistance to their fellow citizens. Thanks for your consideration in reading this plea.

Atlanta Police Detective Styron Traylor has been out of work on sick leave since August 4, 2009 when he suffered a massive stroke. He’s been working very hard to regain full function and movement in his left arm and leg. He realizes he has a long road ahead of him but he refuses to lose faith in his ability to recover.

Det. Traylor, like many APD officers, worked part time jobs in addition to his full 40-hour work week to support his family. Now, more than a year into the devastation caused by this catastrophic turn of events, he’s shouldering not only the responsibility for his own recovery, but financial stress and fear of being a burden.

Atlanta needs Det. Traylor back and he needs to know that we care about him.

So, when you’re done voting on Tuesday, why not purchase a meal for yourself or your family that will allow you to further shape the world you live in? Avelino’s Pizza on the “Atlanta side” of Decatur will be donating 10 percent of all revenue between 11:30 a.m. and 10:00p.m. to Det. Traylor’s battle to get his life back.

Court Watch results 10/27/2010

October 31, 2010 · Posted in Eye on Midtown · Comment

On Wednesday October 27th, several Midtown residents attended two court hearings related to crime in the neighborhood. From this we bring you good news and bad news.

Convicted burglar Michael Hood

Michael Hood – Michael Hood, who burglarized a house in the 800 block of Penn Avenue, was convicted in Fulton Superior Court. Judge Shawn Ellen LaGrua sentence Hood to 20 years for the burglary charge, of which he is to serve 6. On a second burglary charge she sentenced him to seven years, of which to serve one. Both sentences will run concurrently. He will also be banished from Midtown for the remainder of his sentence as a condition of probation.

Court watch attendees described her as a very good judge, and noted that she thanked the attendees for coming.

Andrew Arnett

Andrew Arnett - Meanwhile, another comparable criminal with an equally complex criminal history had a day in court. At issue were a probation violation and a new theft by receiving charge. Arnett pleaded not guilty to the new theft charge and will have an opportunity to challenge it at a later date (the charge involves trying to sell stolen goods back to the owner!).

As for the probation violation, Judge Walter Lovett simply reiterated Arnett’s banishment from Ponce de Leon Avenue. This came despite Arnett’s extensive criminal history, despite prior reiterations, and despite Arnett being visibly strung out on drugs at the hearing (he could not stand still during his case, and twitched constantly).

As an aside, he stared down the court watch attendees, and stalked an MPSA board member during a recess. He even banged on the elevator doors when he did not succeed in prying them open to get on with this MPSA board member.

One of the court watch attendees noted the following: Something else struck me in that court hearing yesterday.  Did you notice how many defendants Judge Lovett put on probation?  The guy,who was there on a felony gambling charge, had already been sentenced and put on probation by Judge Lovett for a different charge earlier this year. Rather then revoking his probation, due to the gambling charge, he continued it.  I thought then this judge wasn’t going to do anything with Arnett.

We routinely monitor jail logs and police reports, and will advise when Arnett’s name crops up again.

Robbery Suspects Memorandum

October 31, 2010 · Posted in Announcements, Eye on Midtown · Comment

We want to share with you a memorandum regarding the apprehension of the robbery suspects from the Piedmont/10th episode last week (with minor edits requested by APD). We would also like to commend all the officers across multiple agencies that worked diligently in bringing the these three major criminals to justice.  Lt. McGee of the Midtown Mini-precinct wrote the memorandum addressed to Major Williams.

I would like to personally thank the many Officers and Troopers whose dedication and diligence made the arrest of three armed robbery perpetrators possible. On October 20th, 2010, Officer T. Henniger and I responded to 1001 Piedmont Ave on a robbery where we met two victims who advised that three black males had robbed them at gunpoint then left in a dark SUV. A witness stated that the suspects left the scene in a dark Chevy SUV. One of the items taken was an iPhone that was GPS capable. The GPS was activated and the signal was tracked by Sgt. M. Price, Investigator L. Jones and Officer Henniger who provided the information on the phone’s location to officer Knapp, Zone 5 FIT.

The signal was tracked for nearly an hour and a half to where the signal eventually was stationary at an apartment complex on Indian Creek Way in Clarkston, DeKalb County. GSP [Georgia State Patrol] and DeKalb County Police were notified and requested to assist. GSP drove by the apartment complex and spotted a dark SUV in the parking lot and several black males with it. Officer Knapp accompanied GSP officers to the apartment complex and stopped the persons who were with the vehicle. The stolen iPhone was discovered in the pants pocket of one of the males. Another male was discovered to have an active warrant for his arrest.

Four suspects, and a fifth male who was suspected of possibly being involved, were transported to the Zone 5 CID [Criminal Investigation Division] office along with the suspect vehicle. The victims were transported to the Zone 5 CID office where they identified three of the males as the ones who had robbed them. Investigator Jones recovered several laptops and other items from the vehicle that were discovered to have been stolen during burglaries in Dekalb and Rockdale counties. Investigator Black, DeKalb County Police, was provided information on the suspects for follow up and potential charges in DeKalb county.

Three suspects were charged with Armed Robbery. Investigator Jones conducted the complex investigation. This incident perfectly illustrates excellent teamwork, dedication, persistence, and multi agency cooperation. Reference case # 10-293-1314.

The memorandum closed by commending the following police officers who had a role in apprehending the suspects:

Sgt. Bill Cooper (Ret.) MPSA

Sgt. J. Longshore

Sgt. R. Moorman

Sgt. M. Price

Investigator L. Jones

SPO. T. Henninger

MPSA Mailbag 10/26/2010

October 26, 2010 · Posted in Eye on Midtown · Comment

What our neighbors are telling us – as always, mailbag items do not necessarily represent the MPSA position.

On Thursday night I was hindered to turn onto my street by a vehicle.  Once I finally followed the car onto the street, it became more obvious what was going on. The shaved or short hair prostitute that always wears a hat was waiting to make an exchange with this vehicle right next to my driveway.  I pulled into my driveway and hopped out as she hopped in the car.  Early 2000s silver Impala with black tint. There was a quick transaction in the Dialysis parking lot and she got out and the car pulled out.  All of this took place before I could walk up. The concerning part to me is the location.  The residents on PDL Court have made significant efforts to clean up the street.  We do not want any slippage of the old ways coming back to our street. Let us know how we can help.
