How at-risk are car seats? - Have you heard of anyone having their car broken into for a car seat? Just wondering…I am getting to the point where I can no longer lug our car seat into the house because it is so heavy and up until now I have been bringing the car seat inside because I don’t want anything left in. the car. MPSA REPLY: we have heard of car seats being taken, but only a couple of times, and we have heard of strollers being stolen off porches. However, anything that the criminals think they can sell on the street for a few dollars – they will take. They have no problem selling a very expensive item for $5 if that will get them crack cocaine.

Suspicious individual (St. Charles) - On another note I had a young black man at my door this afternoon at about 3pm trying to sell me a candle in a can. When he saw I was coming out on the porch where he was, he took off and got in a white Ford Taurus with three other black men and sped off. I think they were casing my house because my back garage door and gate were open where they could see in.

Burglary while resident at home, (vicinity of 5th & Chas Allen) - At 2am on Tuesday, November 17th, I took a late night shower for a period of 10 minutes. When I returned to my room, I noticed that my laptop and iPod were gone. I had stupidly left the front door unlocked from an earlier visit from my neighbors to deliver a missed UPS package. Upon close inspection of the room, I was missing the Macbook Pro laptop, the charger for the laptop, the external keyboard, the IPod touch, the charger for the iPod, and 9 dollars from my wallet. Upon closer inspection of the entire house and the downstairs floor, I was missing a big bag of potato chips, some bananas, and my reserve stash of toilet paper. My room, which faces the front of the house, was lit the entire time, and is on the second floor. This leads me to believe that the [burglar(s)] checked my door, found that it was unlocked, snuck in and stole some useless food/toiletry stuff from downstairs, then were bold enough to go UPSTAIRS where my hallway, room, and bathroom were all lit and there was the noise of the shower running. They then checked my room while it was lit, and took the risk of someone being in there, and stole everything. This all happened within my 10 minute shower, during which I had the bathroom door OPEN and was 10 feet from my room. This is very very bold behavior, especially to walk upstairs into a house where rooms are lit and there is definitely someone awake. I called the police but as expected, there’s little they can do. It was an unforced entry but I think the bold behavior of the criminals is cause for alarm. I had in previous weeks heard some rustling outside my house but pretty much ignored it, and thought it was some vagrant or an animal. MPSA NOTE: Prowlers rustling in the bushes outside your home should be reported to 911 without delay! That is always a potentially dangerous situation…

Once he is released he will be taken to the DeKalb jail and charged with criminal attempt burglary.

Problem Properties

We discovered a problem property at 780 Monroe Drive . We have found in our investigation that this property foreclosed after the last owner abandoned the property. Current conditions found at this location include overgrown lawn, garbage accumulation on the front porch, unsecured windows, and a door ajar. The real estate agent on the for-sale sign no longer has that listing, and told us that he will retrieve the sign soon. This has been reported to Code Enforcement. Upon a further inspection by the patrol on Wednesday evening, new bedding has appeared in the rear apartment that was not there Monday evening.

We also found another problem spot developing on Lakeview Avenue (about 150 feet north of St. Charles). Underneath the kudzu someone has taken the time to cut out literally a room inside the kudzu overgrowth hanging from the power line and trees. It does not appear to be an active vagrant spot at this time, but that is a matter of time. Residents in that area should watch that closely until we arrange for the Kudzu to be cut back.
