Trio of Burglars Apprehended

On Tuesday (8/12), Atlanta Police – with the help of Sgt. Cooper MPSA Patrol – captured a trio of white males who had perpetrated a residential burglary in the 200 block of Ponce de Leon Avenue. They attempted to flee, but were apprehended near Ponce and Boulevard. Atlanta Police are still very early in their investigation, but they are reviewing burglary and theft cases in Midtown, Virginia Highland, and elsewhere.

According to Sgt. Schierbaum, the stated motive for the burglary: to obtain money to support an out of control drug habit and the criminal history of the trio leads to believe that they are likely to once again return our neighborhoods to continue their criminal activity.

Timothy Kozak was booked for Theft for taking and burglary. He is already on probation for theft of services and forgery in the first degree, so he could have plenty of jail time coming. Public records show numerous arrests in Fulton County for various offenses in recent months. He was previously convicted and incarcerated in New Jersey for burglary.

Michael McGuire was booked for burglary and theft by taking, and was also wanted for a probation violation at the time of arrest. According to the Fulton County jail website, he already had outstanding charges going into this week’s incident for possession of cocaine. Prior to this week’s incident this individual had already come under our radar, and we were aware of him living in the Ponce de Leon Hotel.

The third subject initially gave a wrong name, but his identity was later determined to be Jonathan Wells. The Georgia Department of Corrections website shows several periods of incarceration in Georgia for offenses including burglary. He was also arrested for burglary in March of this year. As of this writing, his latest booking and charges did not appear on the Fulton Jail website.

All three are connected with the Ponce & Boulevard drug scene, and are frequently seen in and around the Ponce de Leon Hotel. We will be working closely with Sharla Jackson, our community prosecutor, to ensure the removal of these individuals from our neighborhood. This will be a high-priority court watch case for us, and we strongly feel that probation should never be an option when someone violates the safety of one’s own home. The courts seem to respond more favorably to the community in these matters.
