Robbery Suspect Captured, Shot on the evening of 10/25

Quick action on the part of a witness and diligent work by APD led to the apprehension of robbery suspects in Tuesday evening incidents.

On the evening of 10/25 APD responded to a pedestrian robbery call in the 8th & Myrtle Street area. The victim advised that a black male, about 6′ 1″ in height and about 180 lbs, robbed him at gunpoint about an hour to an hour and a half prior to his calling 911. According to the police report narrative, the suspect came up from behind him and placed a gun to the side of his head, and then reached into his jacket pockets to take the car keys and a coin wallet. The victim did not get a good look at the suspect, but he believed that the suspect was wearing a gray running jacket and blue jeans. The suspect then ran toward Myrtle Street. To counter the concern that the suspect would return and take the rental truck that they now had the keys to, Budget Rentals arranged for the towing of the truck.

Also during the same evening another pedestrian robbery took place, and police believe that the same suspect perpetrated that one too. In the second incident, two people – a male/female couple – were robbed around the same time as the first victim. The victims reported that the suspect placed a gun to their head and took their belongings. Witnesses called 911 while the robbery was in progress, and described how a grey Nissan Quest fled the scene. APD officers promptly converged on the scene to take the report from the victim.

Afterwards, Zone 5 units were on the lookout for the vehicle used to flee the robbery scene when they spotted it in the 600 block of the Parkway Drive (between North Avenue and Ponce). Upon initiation of a traffic stop, the driver discharged a firearm at the officers as he emeged from the vehicle. Both officers returned fire and struck the assailant in his midsection. AJC wrote that there were two suspects, with one of the suspects being taken to Grady for a gunshot wound. At this time we have no information as to the seriousness of the injury sustained, nor any information about whether this second suspect was apprehended or remains at large. Thankfully, none of the officers or the victims were injured in any of this.

Midtown residents saw a helicopter circling the area during the 10pm hour on Tuesday evening, numerous blue lights all along Parkway Drive, and homicide detectives on the scene. Police tell us that they believe this suspect to have been involved in additional pedestrian robberies in the area. Both the neighbor who quickly called 911 with a good suspect description, and most certainly to the Atlanta Police for intercepting the suspects, deserved a huge credit. We will announce names of these thugs when we have that information.

We will continue to post updates at our Facebook page and to our website as they become available.
